Avon budget workshop declines fire staffing, directs library funding increase. The Board of Selectmen and Finance Committee unanimously rejected the Fire Chief's request for four additional full-time firefighters and cut the union salary line-item budget by $332,000, with Board Member Eric S. Beckerman requesting a SAFER grant application before the request is revisited.
Library Director Elise LaForge sought approximately $40,000 for a full-time Children's Librarian position; the Board directed the library to add funds to an expense line to ensure it meets its Municipal Appropriation Requirement with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, which it has struggled with since a pandemic-era funding waiver. Council on Aging Director Jane Carthas reported approximately $17,000 in available van revolving funds for vehicle maintenance and fuel.
