Select Board moves to terminate school IT agreement, create Fire Chaplain position
Select Board · Meeting of May 7, 2026
Avon Select Board terminates IT services pact with schools, approves unpaid Fire Chaplain. Board Clerk Eric S. Beckerman advanced motions to rescind the Memorandum of Understanding with the Avon Public Schools--citing the school's hiring of an IT Director with no municipal experience as a breach--and to create an unpaid Fire Chaplain position filled by Pastor Rick Cederholm, both unanimously approved.
The board also unanimously voted to opt out of a new state cannabis delivery requirement after Police Chief Bukunt and Health Agent Kathleen Washburn expressed opposition on safety grounds. Town Administrator Jonathan L. Beder reported the town received $150,000 in Legislative Earmark and $500,000 in MassWorks Grant funding for sewer project engineering and permitting, though federal EDA funding was not secured.
The board scheduled an emergency workshop for May 12 to open a Special Town Meeting Warrant restoring Town Clerk and Town Administrator budgets before the July 1 deadline.
